Flint Mission Project 2017
Help a deserving family in Flint with some minor home repairs this summer.
June 18 – 23, 2017
WE BELIEVE IN HOPEWe are the hands and feet of Christ
This is who we are
WHO WE ARE
The Flint Mission Project consists of volunteers that perform short term mission work in Flint, Michigan. The project is overseen by members of Calvary United Methodist Church, Flint, Michigan, bringing volunteers together to participate in short term mission work in the Flint area. Past projects include stripping and re-shingling roofs, painting houses, rebuilding porches, drywall work, landscaping, rebuilding/repairing porch steps & railings, minor plumbing repairs, repairing kitchen cupboards, and removing & replacing windows.
HOW WE STARTED
The Flint Mission Project got their start after Jeff Johnson did two mission tours following Hurricane Katrina. He said while on the trip, a fellow volunteer told him he didn’t have to leave home to do a mission trip, it could be as simple as walking out his back door.
“That stuck with me,” Johnson said. “So within that week, one night the Lord laid it on my heart to stay here and do this. So, ever since then, I have put all my effort into it.”
HOW IT WORKS
Homeowners are chosen in an application process through the church. Applicants have to meet certain requirements to be considered for the project – they have to own the home and make less than $26,000 a year, just to name a few.
Funds for the mission project are raised by the volunteers as well as a small grant from the Methodist District. Each volunteer is asked to raise $200, of which a small portion covers their food and lodging during the mission, the rest goes toward supplies for the project.
We take care of all the food preparation, planning of job sites, having relevant devotions and inspiring worship, so all you have to do is give up a week of your summer and help change lives.
We Repair Roofs
If you are not afraid of heights or ladders then you can always help us replace and repair roofs for those in desperate need of repair.
We Paint Houses
Sometimes all that is needed to give a home a new look and feel is a fresh coat of paint. Not only does the homeowner feel like they have a new house, it’s one way to brighten up the neighborhood.
And so much more…
There are plenty of jobs that anyone at just about any age can help with during this week long mission project. People volunteer to help out in the kitchen to feed the entire crew. We also need volunteers to help clean up worksites and plant flow
THERE IS PLENTY OF WORK TO BE DONEHelp a deserving family in Flint this year
Helping Each Other Grow
WHAT A TYPICAL DAY COULD LOOK LIKE
We wake up early around 6:30 to our morning devotionals. We believe in the power of the Holy Spirit to give us wisdom and strength to face that day’s challenges and hard work. Following the devotions we share in a hearty breakfast. After breakfast we pack our sack lunches before heading out to our assigned worksites. It is can get quite hot here in Michigan during the summer, so we often take breaks to keep everyone fully charged. One of the breaks is lunch at the worksite. The typical work day ends around 4:00 when we head back to the church to get cleaned up before dinner. Evening devotion with praise and worship is around 7:00pm leaving plenty of evening rest time for everyone to relax and recharge.
We also want to make sure everyone knows that it isn’t all work and no play. There is a small game room to break out some fun with new friends. Every year Wednesday night is set aside for a fun group outing.
Our Mission is to show the community of Flint that there is hope in Jesus Christ. Flint Mission Project helps deserving families in Flint with minor home repairs.
PACK YOUR BAGS
We stay right at the heart of the project area at Calvary United Methodist Church. We can accommodate groups of all sizes. There is plenty of work to keep everyone busy all week long.
GROW CLOSER TO GOD
We start off each day with group led devotionals to allow God’s word to encourage us and to inspire one another. We believe in the power of the Holy Spirit to guide us and give us the strength for the day.
You will never forget the joy in helping those in need. And the blessing you will receive from giving up a little piece of your summer.
WHY FLINT MICHIGAN
Since the late 1960s through the end of the 20th century, Flint has suffered from disinvestment, deindustrialization, depopulation and urban decay, as well as high rates of crime, unemployment and poverty. Our mission is to help turn that around, by offering hope to those who still love the people and this city.
Each year we try to capture with photos and video the moments we all share during this week. Our highlight video is a great way to remember the week, but to share with family and friends.
Every volunteer receives a T-shirt to help promote and create awareness in the community. Who doesn’t love a FREE t-shirt?
